🧵on the D.C. Council's proposed changes to Mayor Muriel Bowser proposed 2026 budget. First up, Councilmember Matt Frumin has found $6 million to keep all D.C. Public Library neighborhood branches open 61 hours a week. Bowser had proposed cutting those to 40 hours a week, citing staffing challenges.

Janeese has to look at this result and think long and hard about next year's Mayors race. Just sayin

With this vote, Congress makes ICE the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency in history, with more money per year at its disposal over the next four years than the budgets of the FBI, DEA, ATF, US Marshals, and Bureau of Prisons combined.

We mourn the passing of David Schwartzman, beloved FBC Steering Committee member & lifelong activist for human rights, peace, racial and economic justice. David was a force to be reckoned with and always, always showed up to fight for liberation. His passing is a great loss.

I'm saddened to learn of the passing of David Schwartzman, a dear friend and longtime DC activist. David was a passionate educator, an ally of working people, and fervent advocate for climate and economic justice. He will be sorely missed.

I covered many of David’s runs for office, and he was always authentically himself. It was often clear he wasn’t going to win, but just having his voice in debates and on the campaign trail was valuable. When he said something, it’s because he believed it, and passionately. RIP.

David will be missed. Beyond always being willing to get in good trouble, I can’t think of a time when David wasn’t on the side of justice, liberation, and equity. That’s a hell of a legacy. Prayers and peace for all who loved him.

And RCV funding passes, 8-4! Bonds, Felder, Mendo, McDuffie are the only dissenters. Huge move here that could upend the 2026 elections (when the mayor, Council chair, AG and lots of Council seats are up) if it goes into effect in time.

Big update in council: By vote of 8 to 4, lawmakers just voted to fund ranked choice voting in the budget, one of the two voting reforms that passed as ballot initiative I-83 last November.

First results are in: Trayon White leads by a few hundred votes over Sheila Bunn, but pretty close. These are likely all the early votes and we need to wait for Election Day tallies.

BREAKING: The AP has called the DC Ward 8 special election race for former Councilmember Trayon White. He wins the four-way race with only 29.7% of the vote. The remaining three candidates, as of 9:31pm, notched a collective 4,106 votes. RESULTS: fox5dc.com/news/dc-2025-s…
