AAS CSMA Dra. Nicole 🏳️🌈 "Quals", or qualifying exams, are a staple in most PhD programs in the United States, and are often used to predict which students are most likely to complete their PhDs. Today's panel will discuss how quals disproportionately impact students of marginalised identities.

Dra. Nicole 🏳️🌈 notes that our field already has a power heirarchy, and the survey seems to indicate that people are aware that quals perpetuate the power heirarchy!

Please apply! The astrobites collaboration is such a wonderful group of people.

From Lucas Brown: What if we could use continuous gravitational waves from far away pulsars to learn about the inside of our very own sun? The authors of today’s paper explore what it would take to make this far-out idea a reality. astrobites.org/2023/11/11/usi…

Apply to write for astrobites! Writing for astrobites for the past two years has improved my writing and communication skills so much, and I've gotten to meet other grad students from all over the country :) It's such a great opportunity and I really encourage you all to apply!
