My paper with Spencer Andrews Maryam Vaziri-Pashkam and Chris Baker is out in Cerebral Cortex! TL;DR food-selectivity is not a (new) form of "category-selectivity". Rather, food images recruit neural regions associated with action planning and understanding. academic.oup.com/cercor/article…

Using non-invasive MRI, we found a pathway in dog brains that predicts receptive vocabulary size. It’s left-lateralized & connects regions that produce and perceive vocal communication. A convergently evolved arcuate fasciculis? Read at Current Biology: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Are we sensitive to pain-related facial expressions? Chris Buckland is interested in what genuine pain looks like and whether its recognition elicits approach or avoidance behaviors from observers. His first paper looks at injury-related expressions: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Here, Kenji W Koyano et al. show that šŸ’ neurons in certain face patches barely react to pareidolia (illusory faces in objects). doi.org/10.1016/j.pneu… To those who have argued that the brain "obviously" processes stimuli that look like faces as faces—it's not that simple.
