This thread is a serious indictment of a growing part of academic publishing. The economics of the academic publication system mean that some journals are incentivized to publish nonsense and scientists are incentivized to play along. It has metastasized into a pyramid scheme.

Some people are not nice. It's a fact of people. Social media's problem is that it rewards hostility and trolling in ways that real interactions don't. So social media may not make people more hostile, but it makes the rest of us perceive our social *environment* as hostile.
