Would "hate speech" laws have stopped the Nazis? No. Absolutely not. In fact, hate speech laws existed in post-WWI Germany. They not only helped the Nazis gain power, they helped the Nazis censor anyone who challenged them. FIRE Senior Fellow—and the daughter of a

Holding administrators hostage is not free speech. Assault is not free speech. Disrupting classes is not free speech. Barring students from getting to class is not free speech. Any Barnard College agitators who chose force over peaceful protest must be held accountable.

I’m still learning and thinking about the Mahmoud Khalil case myself (among other sources, here: youtu.be/XJUvK9j0Ukg?si…), but FIRE always stands on its principles. It’s very confusing…! 🔥

George + FIRE = good common sense and refreshing circumspection. I’m continuing to learn and mull. At the moment, I lean disagree here with my pals at FIRE: “Yes, the state can and will take into consideration things like a potential immigrant’s viewpoint for granting a green

Many universities, like eg UW, Tacoma, used UCB’s language as its template. To my knowledge, UWT never had the gall to eliminate 75% of applicants based on DEI as UCB did, but we had at least one search in which we got rid of 37%. Good to see it go the way of the Pac 12.

Re: “50% of faculty nationwide believe they [DEI statements] are ideological litmus tests”: As Steve could tell you, that’s not half of an evenly balanced group! Given how dominant the far left is on campus, 50% agreement is an extraordinarily high number.

In JGB13 brother Mike sics Aristotle on AI to argue that AI is not intelligence artificially made but just fake intelligence: youtu.be/Li62S8dnjEY. AI sics back by informing Aristotle that they are in love + that he had a boring Valentine's Day dinner w/ Plato. ♥️ Call it a

Well done, FIRE: “UConn Med now lets students opt out of DEI pledge of allegiance” thefire.org/news/uconn-med… But pause to marvel at the fact that until FIRE stepped in this was “mandatory”—at a public university! I also wonder if it’s actually or just nominally voluntary (eg, who
