1/ Australia is on track for 25 years of budget deficits. Teenagers starting high school today have never seen a budget surplus and probably won’t until they are well into adulthood. The federal government needs to cut spending and raise taxes. Here’s why, and how. 🧵 #auspol

Attacks on Grattan’s super policy proposals are misguided. Our reforms are hard-headed, rational – and necessary. Here’s why. Brendan Coates #auspol grattan.edu.au/news/making-su…

We’ve been profiled alongside Sydney YIMBY by Elias Visontay for Guardian Australia. The piece is fantastic, and really lays out what we’re fighting for, and why housing abundance is a fight everyone can get behind. theguardian.com/australia-news…

Building on Howard Maclean’s critique of the absence of land use in elite policy discourse I was struck in @jollyswagmanpod’s excellent interviews with former Treasury Secretary Ken Henry about how little interest that generation of policymakers seemed to have in urban economics

Why freezing rents would do more harm than good. My latest in The Sydney Morning Herald with Joey Moloney on how national cabinet should and should not tackle the rental crisis. We should strengthen rental protections, raise rent assistance and boost housing supply. smh.com.au/national/why-f…

Better understanding of housing affordability was a key reason I moved into the property space… so I’m really excited to launch the new PropTrack Housing Affordability Index and report today: rea3.irmau.com/site/pdf/72d2d…

2024 is shaping up as the year of the renter. Labor needs to do more if it wants to keep their vote. Joey Moloney and I outline a roadmap for federal housing policy in Guardian Australia. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

This is an important point and goes to the heart of a disconnect in the Aus housing poliocy debate, especially between economists & planners. 1/13

One arg against NG/CGT reform that should be given short shrift is that it will disrupt 'retirement planning', as if they are as much retirement as tax policy. Retirement policy is about preventing poverty and smoothing consumption. Obvious that investment property doesn't fit.

The Coalition’s plan to make mortgage payments tax deductible for first home buyers who purchase a newly-built home is a big backward step for both tax and housing policy in Australia. liberal.org.au/2025/04/13/cre… /1
