Earlier the White House made claims about BBC News (UK) reporting which were wrong. It’s important that accurate journalism is respected, and that governments call for free access to Gaza.

Bazalgette said the “absolute gold-plated priority is the BBC World Service” in terms of maintaining soft power. He said it was “the jewel in our crown...I’m hoping that we don’t diminish the World Service any further, and that we find ways of actually funding it further."

Today is 30th anniv of death of John Schofield - friend and fellow @ITN trainee, killed on a story in the Balkans for BBC News (UK) To this day the John Schofield Trust supports young journos. The anniversary is a moment to remember all reporters lost in the pursuit of truth.

Thoughts are with Ian Kirby tonight. His dad Albert led the police team which convicted murderers of James Bulger - a story I covered as a young reporter. Albert Kirby was an old fashioned copper in the best of ways, and his death today comes at end of a life to take pride in.
