Bazalgette said the “absolute gold-plated priority is the BBC World Service” in terms of maintaining soft power. He said it was “the jewel in our crown...I’m hoping that we don’t diminish the World Service any further, and that we find ways of actually funding it further."

Thoughts are with Ian Kirby tonight. His dad Albert led the police team which convicted murderers of James Bulger - a story I covered as a young reporter. Albert Kirby was an old fashioned copper in the best of ways, and his death today comes at end of a life to take pride in.
