China has won this round of the trade war, in Beijing's eyes. Beijing's view is that its "firm countermeasures & resolute stance" have been highly effective. They believe Trump has folded, at least for now, in the face of China’s ā€œfirmnessā€ & the negative market reaction.

He Weidong's disappearance means he may be the latest and most senior officer to fall in Xi's PLA purge. Jon Czin told The Wire China: "It’s the opposite of the old approach to ā€˜kill the chicken to scare the monkeys’. [Now, Xi is] killing the monkeys." thewirechina.com/2025/05/11/all…

In reaction to the US-China trade war de-escalation, Jon Czin tells the The New York Times: ā€œMy suspicion is that Beijing sees this as a tactical retreat by the U.S. rather than a more fundamental shift away from hostility toward the Chinese Communist Party." nytimes.com/2025/05/14/wor…

In Foreign Affairs, Bonny Lin, John Culver, and I argue: 1) Beijing's perceptions of Lai are worsening, akin to their views of Chen Shui-bian. 2) China is now more willing to use its military. 3) Perceived divisions in the Trump admin raise the risk of Chinese miscalculation.

My new piece in the New York Times is an urgent wake-up call. China is forging ahead on the industries of the future: AI, robotics, high-tech manufacturing. Meanwhile, Trump is destroying the pillars of US strength by slashing public R&D funding and scaring away foreign talent.
