I think everyone who works in a primary school accepts that the curriculum is overloaded. We simply can't squeeze in everything that we're supposed to. However, there are two things that we must try and ensure take place each day: class storytime and independent reading.

Went to look at my schools book swap shelf (open to the community) and discovered 2 books I was hoping to get! Great selection of chn and adult literature - magazines, non fiction and board books. A great find! I’ll add a few to it as well. Everyone a reader! #readingforpleasure

Another brill webinar from BookTrust about building a culture of reading for pleasure in primary schools - thank you Jon Biddle & Esther Brown! "Don't discourage children from reading anything, anytime, anywhere!" A live rap of the Gruffalo MC Grammar was a perfect way to end.

So pleased with the outcome of the character quizzes for Reading for Pleasure 🧶 #booknics I curated these lists with the children at my school and they are a reading river of the last 5 years - certain children, special memories of sharing & growing #RfP Do consider hosting a Booknic! 1/3

It feels like there's a tough term coming up in schools, with issues around SEND, behaviour and funding all coming to a head. I feel extremely fortunate to work alongside the most amazing set of teachers and support staff. The job would be pretty much impossible if I didn't.

I'm running an online session with Richard Ruddick on Wed 13th Nov (3:45pm) about using graphic novels in class and building a classroom reading culture. Lots of recommendations and book talk! It's the last joint one we're doing for a while. eventbrite.co.uk/o/jon-biddle-9…

If a school understands the importance of reading for pleasure and enjoyment, it doesn't mean that they don't also understand the importance of phonics, fluency, comprehension and all the other essential aspects of reading. They're not mutually exclusive.

No 32 in my #FavePicturebooks24 is… “Heatwave” by #LaurenRedniss. It is a books that truly captures that sweltering nature of a really boiling day and the relief when it breaks. The use of colour is brilliant. A clever stylish book. #PicturebookPage

There's still time to sign up and get involved in #MichaelRosenDay! He's an absolute legend and his poetry has been enjoyed and celebrated in classrooms for decades. My pupils are very excited about hearing him talk later. Michael Rosen 💙💙🎓🎓 NICE 爷爷 michaelrosen.co.uk/michaelrosenday

No30 in my #FavePicturebooks24 is… “The Robbery” by #JoaquinCamp. It’s a madcap heist story. Funny and ridiculous, a joyous share with primary children. The felt-tip art is fab and it’s full of visual storytelling. Kids straight away went and made their own #PicturebookPage

I was fortunate enough to have an amazing Year 10 student in on work experience. She loves reading and spent almost thirty minutes recommending books to my class, who were totally absorbed by her passion. I've written about it for the Reading for Pleasure 🧶 site. ourfp.org/eop/recommenda…
