I've been getting used to gganimate and thought it would be useful to put together some illustrations of what various causal inference methods *actually do to data* and how they work. Here, for example, is what it means to control for a (binary) variable

Congrats to Valerie Bostwick and Bruce Weinberg, whose paper "Nevertheless She Persisted" was featured in the December 2018 NBER digest. The work uses IRIS UMETRICS data to highlight STEM doctoral completion rates for women. #irisumetrics nber.org/digest/dec18/w…

@dhsandler @[email protected] @AdamBeeEcon This trend is not likely to reverse itself. This why I’ve argued that 21st Century Economic and Social Measurement will be much more reliant on non-survey source data. aeaweb.org/articles?id=10…

the Science of Science funding NBER SI meeting will be livestreamed tmw: youtube.com/channel/UC79EL…. Second paper of the morning uses (and cites, thank you!) our scientific patent citations data from relianceonscience.org

Was hoping to announce that we reached 20k downloads at relianceonscience.org over the weekend, but we fell just a bit short :-( In this version, every patent-to-paper citation we extracted prior to 1910 has been hand-checked. If you were using v25 or earlier, pls update!

What older #researchers have in experience, they may lack in creativity. H. Yu, G. Marschke, @M_B_Ross, @JosephStaudt & B. Weinberg analyzed 30 years of papers to find senior scientists are more likely to cite older references and use fewer new ideas. doi.org/10.3368/jhr.59…

How does funding uncertainty affect science? Every Oct, we get headlines bemoaning the impact of the federal budgeting process on science. Does it matter that grant $$ takes a bit longer to get out the door, or is it just a nuisance we can deal with?

What happens after cuts to federal funding of university researchers? From our recent QJE, these cuts are followed by fewer high-tech startups and publications, but higher patenting. Higher patenting stems from increased reliance on industry funders who appropriate innovation.
