Super proud of my 2nd PhD paper exploring shifts in evo. integration among reef fish fins with expansions in locomotor modes, out now in Evolution. Within modes there is much diversity in fin shape and weak connections between form and function. doi.org/10.1093/evolut…

Evolutionary integration is generally weakened with the evolution of novel swimming modes. Suggesting that functional expansion may be facilitated by decoupling of the fins.

Cool Science: Fascinating and important new paper "Allometric scaling of somatic mutation and epimutation rates ..." by Frank Johannes in Evolution Journal . He shows that annual somatic (epi)mutation rates are inversely related to lifespan #Genetics #EvolBiol academic.oup.com/evolut/article…

I start by discussing the idea of unifying evolutionary genomics, a stated goal of the book, and evaluate Gu’s contributions to this goal, which are quite impressive! doi.org/10.1093/evolut…

In between I discuss the essential concepts and results of each chapter, which occupies the bulk of the review, and critically note some absences. If any of the topics present are of interest to you, give the book itself a read! academic.oup.com/book/58908?log…

The Rhinocryptidae radiation is possibly one of the most enigmatic; our new study shows the importance of song as a signal in this group of mountain-loving birds. Nice collab with Paola Laiolo IMIB - Instituto Mixto Investigación Biodiversidad out in "Evolution" SSE . Picture: N Athanas academic.oup.com/evolut/advance…

Evolution Digests are short articles summarizing original research in Evolution and placing it in a larger context, making the work more accessible to those outside the study's specific subfield. Learn how to submit a Digest here: sites.duke.edu/evodigests/
