Mom & I flew to Cairo last night to visit Alaa today. Communication is via phone speaker so we split the time since we can't hear him together. From her end it was a soothing visit mostly grandchildren updates. Mine was 2 siblings shaken by the possibility of losing their mother.

Thirteen and a half years ago in March 2011, a group of teenagers in Dara'a, Syria spray painted: "Your turn has come, doctor," in reference to Bashar al-Assad. They were arrested and tortured, which led to protests in what would become the Syrian uprising. Today is for them.

Alaa Abd el-Fattah must be freed! With his mother, Laila Soueif, on a critical hunger strike for over 80 days while he remains unjustly detained in Egypt, the UK government must act now. Keir Starmer + David Lammy, it’s time to #FreeAlaa. accessnow.org/press-release/…

Campaigners (including me) want Sir Keir Starmer to make a direct intervention with Egyptian president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to help free Alaa Abd El-Fattah. I’m perplexed at why the UK is so bad at freeing its hostages. independent.co.uk/news/uk/keir-s…

Laila is back outside Downing Street on Day 116 of hunger strike. She is “devastated” that David Lammy is not returning from Egypt with her son. She’s calling on the Prime Minister to urgently intervene to save Alaa.

Scything cuts to US foreign aid will drain an already shallow pool of funding for embattled human rights defenders and independent media. That should worry Europeans, whose own budget cuts are part of the problem, writes James Lynch. ECFR MENA buff.ly/40TUjIu

Europe cannot fully replace US democracy and human rights funding, but it can act now. Flexible, unrestricted support for at-risk grassroots groups would help sustain civil society in the Middle East at a critical moment. 📝 James Lynch buff.ly/40TUjIu

Thank you Prime Minister for this clear commitment to do everything you can for Alaa’s release so he can be reunited with his son in Brighton. Today Laila is on her 140th day of hunger strike in protest at her son's continued imprisonment beyond his sentence in Egypt. #FreeAlaa

"The whole house will be shocked to learn the worrying news that Laila Soueif was admitted to St Thomas' Hospital last night. Can the Foreign Secretary update us on whether the Prime Minister has now spoken to the Egyptian president to secure the release of Alaa Abd el-Fattah?"

Free Alaa (@freedomforalaa) 's Twitter Profile Photo

“Could I ask the Prime Minister to pick up the phone to President Sisi & seek the release of Alaa” “I can assure him I will do everything I can to ensure his release, and that includes phone calls as necessary. I gave my word to the family that's what I will do, and I will”

Thank you Keir Starmer. I hope their next conversation to be in days not weeks. "The PM discussed the case of British national Alaa Abd El-Fattah with President Sisi. He pressed for Alaa’s release, having met his mother Laila Soueif in recent weeks." gov.uk/government/new…

Children are being burned—what words are left to say? There are no words or appeals left. We are being burned alive, suffering from starvation, displacement, and genocide. Let all the world’s moral systems go to the garbage heap of history. You have failed to protect the innocent
