President Trump and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa exchange on genocide. Q: "What will it take for you to be convinced that there's no white genocide in South Africa?" Ramaphosa: "I can answer that for the president." Trump: "I'd rather have him answer."

Here another study confirming our <1.5°C Planetary Boundary. Already at current 1.2°C of global mean temperature rise, we are in danger for multi-meter sea level rise over the coming centuries with major Earth system impacts theguardian.com/environment/20…

The ocean is our planet’s life support system. Yet we are failing to protect it. Ahead of #UNOC3, my colleagues and I write in nature calling for the permanent protection of international waters from fishing, seabed mining, and oil and gas extraction. nature.com/articles/d4158…

Excellent Podcast hosted by Mark Lynas, with Prof Callum Roberts, top marine scientist and lead author of our Nature Commentary on Ocean protection earlier this week (and if you are interested, check out my Podcast with Mark last week) UNOC weplanet.org/podcast/episod…

The ocean is a global commons that supports all life, and the stability of nations. Across the entire world. The ocean is heating, losing life, acidifying, loaded with plastic and chemicals, losing oxygen. Losing resilience. Sylvia Earle's call to action observer.co.uk/news/our-plane…

Johan Rockström Ocean resilience is the heartbeat of our world. Honoring ancient wisdom and acting together, we restore balance—for the Earth, and for ourselves. Our future depends on what we choose, now.

New paper shows the pace of global warming has roughly doubled since the 1980s. Led by Piers Forster, over 60 scientists have worked to update "Indicators of Global Climate Change" - including PIK researchers William Lamb and Jan Minx. pik-potsdam.de/en/news/latest…

Believe it or not, the usual suspects are trying to sell the little blip at the end of the Antarctic ice loss curve (due to a few strong snowfall events in East Antarctica) as proof that "global warming is a hoax". It just shows once again that "climate skeptics" just fool you.

This important paper passed under the media radar. It analyses a key indicator of the stability of the Atlantic ocean circulation #AMOC, in measured ocean data. It finds that most climate models get this wrong, and thus have an #AMOC that is too stable. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

🥵The weather station at PIK in Potsdam has recorded the driest first six months of a year since measurements began in 1893 – with only 146.8mm of rainfall. The long-term average for this location in the first half of the year is around 300mm. pik-potsdam.de/en/news/latest…

I support EU commission target of 90% emission reductions by 2040. But, it must be fully delivered domestically. The proposal of allowing ”flexible” offsets (compensate failed reductions at home with investments abroad) is not aligned with scientific necessity, and thus a mistake

The Mediterranean Sea is now measuring off-the-scale warmer than anything we've ever seen before for this time of year. If this trend continues, the consequences for marine life and ecosystems in the region will be devastating.
