It's OFFICIAL. Hakai Magazine will continue; not in name, but in spirit. In January 2025, senior staff from Hakai will be joining bioGraphic magazine biographic.com That means more awesome narrative features and science-based news. But, of course, WE NEED YOUR HELP

You may have heard the exciting news... We are pleased to announce a partnership with the team from Hakai Magazine, an award-winning publication based in Victoria, British Columbia, that covers coastal and ocean stories from around the world.

Congrats to my friends at Hakai Magazine & bioGraphic on joining forces! These pubs fill vital niches and treat their writers fairly, and I'm thrilled that they'll continue to thrive together. Only objection: missed opportunity to rebrand as *Hakaiographic*.

“Out of all the milestones that we’ve had, this one to me is the most significant. It feels like catharsis. It feels like the right path.” - Yurok Fisheries Department Director Barry McCovey, The Associated Press apnews.com/article/klamat…

"Over the past 70 years, fin whales have gone from being the most whaled whale to the most struck whale in the world." Alarming Hakai Magazine/@ltrethew story. Not even living in the ocean & being really fast is protection from vehicles. #roadecology hakaimagazine.com/features/the-c…

For the young readers in your life. Or, as my English teacher friend says, picture books are for everyone! By the wonderful writer of kid non-fiction herself: Adrienne Mason.bsky.social hakaimagazine.com/features/littl…

Just a reminder, Hakai Magazine staff has an exciting 2025 to look forward to--we're migrating. Help us if you can, environmental journalism needs support! We have challenges but the world is not a complete dumpster fire: biographic.com/hakai-magazine…

What media outlets are providing good coverage of the ocean, at the global scale? Surveyed journalists included Hakai Magazine on the list. We definitely punch above our weight. Looking forward to joining forces with bioGraphic in 2025! pulitzercenter.org/sites/default/…

I love stories that peel the layers off an "unknown" land, a place that was once nurturing to terrestrial life & beloved by its residents. A great piece in Hakai Magazine. Writer Tristan McCondell and editor Shanna Baker made Doggerland come to life!

Congrats to judeisabella and Kat Pyne on TWO nominations for their Hakai Magazine feature "Where the Rivers Run Pink," and to other colleagues including Jaela Bernstien and Molly Segal for their nominations. I'm also honoured to be a finalist for this piece hakaimagazine.com/news/in-coasta…

So proud to be nominated alongside judeisabella for a story that took us all the way to the northernmost reaches of Norway following invasive pink salmon— our last Hakai Magazine assignment together 🫶
