๐พI am thrilled to finally share the exciting news that I am joining Univ. of Alberta University of Alberta UAlberta Faculty of ALES as their new Assistant Professor starting Jan 2024! Iโll be leading Wheat Breeding & Genetics program focused on variety development for western Canadian wheat growers. 1/n

Our wheat F3 families!! We canโt wait to map the recessive stripe rust resistance gene in this material. Kudos to Naveen Kumar and Jujhar Singh Gill for leading this project.

I am pleased to share my first first-authored peer-reviewed paper!! Thanks to Drs. Harpinder S Randhawa ๐พ, @SantoshAAFC, Muhammad Iqbal, and Randy Kutcher for their contributions!

Southern BC is the best place in Canada for stripe rust resistance screening! Change my mind. Winter wheat breeding lines from University of Manitoba prog- loaded with rust in our Abbotsford nursery. All natural. Excellent green bridge for our spring wheat nursery. Pic credit- Jujhar Singh Gill

We can spot differences in our yield plots already! Plots are looking beautiful this year. If you want to know more about our program UAlberta Cereal Breeding Lab (CBL), come visit us on July 18th for the field day. Register here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIโฆ

We UAlberta Cereal Breeding Lab (CBL) run Canadaโs largest (~70,000) plots) wheat FHB + stripe rust screening nursery in BC with breeding lines from UAlberta Cereal Breeding Lab (CBL) Crop Development Centre - USask AAFC Canada LimagrainWheat Natural rust infection is building up. Hoping for a good selection year. Funded by: Sask Wheat NSERC / CRSNG

Southern BC is unarguably the best location in Canada for screening wheat with yellow rust. This is a pic of one of the breeding lines from our UAlberta Cereal Breeding Lab (CBL) Abbotsford nursery. Itโs all Natural infection - not inoculated. Borlaug Global Rust Initiative Canadian Wheat Research Coalition Sask Wheat NSERC / CRSNG

Our program UAlberta Cereal Breeding Lab (CBL) website is now live! Visit the link below for our research, team, wheat varieties description and much more exciting stuff. UAlberta Cereal Breeding Lab (CBL) is for and inspired by Alberta wheat & barley growers! cerealbreedinglab.ca

A collaborative study by the Open Wild Wheat Consortium (OWWC) with help from UAlberta Cereal Breeding Lab (CBL) sheds light on how bread wheat became one of the most successful crops on the planet. #UAlberta bit.ly/3WNNjuw

Next up, my friend and our workshop co-organizer Upinder Gill NDSU Plant Genetics & Rust Pathology talking about use of Aegilops umbellulata in improving bread wheat. #IWC2024

Next up, my own stellar UG student Jujhar Singh Gill talking about genetics of stripe rust resistance in spelt wheat. UAlberta Cereal Breeding Lab (CBL) #IWC2024

Our new CPS wheat variety HY2161 is a very good replacement for AAC Penhold. Weโre excited to see a lot of interest in HY2161. Name for HY2161 coming soon. Thanks to Canadian Wheat Research Coalition Alberta Grains Sask Wheat Manitoba Crop Alliance funding that led to the development of this variety.
