And math! Average grad rate for 4-year degree (NCES) is 60% in 6 years. Major risk factor for not finishing: taking remedial math. Koon’s (2019) excellent study showing access to rigorous course sequences in HS is not sufficient. Children have to have the skills to benefit.

Targeting student motivation or ways to help students organize their work & work harder, is not the right solution & will only worsen gaps. Making sure ALL have access to science-backed core instruction in reading, writing, & math (& making sure all students grow) is key.
