Have y’all looked at Elon’s X page lately? Its insane. Along with how the ads and other features are a dumpster fire, I’m out for a little (likely until the election is over).

AI-Science: New features! - Human-AI copilot app: Much more powerful (and fun) than the AI agents doing it all. - Fully annotated figures! - “Data Chaining”: All results (inc Figures) are click-traced to the specific code lines that created them! pip install data-to-paper

Pandemic sour dough still going strong! Yeast diversity/evolution folks, let me know if you want a sample. Yeast isolated from a endemic San Diego cactus, but who knows what strain has taken over in the last 4 years.

It looks like I never posted anything (*but see below) on what are probably the most surprising results my lab obtained so far. Anyway, this work—led by an outstanding former PhD student Sarah Ardell in collaboration with Milo Johnson—is now published: science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

I think this is so amazing. The way Roy explained this aspect of his work to me is that he’s making the slow parts of science fast - I agree and think it’s a major contribution, in the future we may all have more time for the fun parts of science including mentoring!

Excited to report that Joy Bergelson (bergelsonlab.org) and I will be running a brand new GRC conference on the Function of Evolving Systems in the summer of 2026. The 2028 one will be chaired by Mikhail Tikhonov (physics.wustl.edu/people/mikha...) & Alvaro Sanchez Lab! Stay tuned!

To get 2025 off to a good start, I'm delighted to share with you our study published today in Nature Microbiology 🎉 We studied the ability of the receptor-binding proteins (RBP) of >100 animal viruses to mediate entry into human cells. A short thread below. nature.com/articles/s4156…

My lab’s 5-year NIH R01 grant, awarded to study gene therapy for hearing loss, was abruptly terminated. I want to share how this action has been incredibly harmful and disruptive, not just to my lab, but to the scientific process itself. 1/15
