Remember: One person's "complaint" is another person's "description." In other news, I describe a lot of things (too many?) in faculty meetings.

Hey, look: I said "long weekend," not "productive weekend." That would completely defeat the spirit of Labor Day, sheesh.

I've been building math models for over 30 years. I love it. It just dawned on me today that the "early serious stages" of doing it is like packing for a trip with a young child: initially pack everything you might need, only to later realize you needed at most 2 or 3 of them.

On point related to my earlier post: if we think about reviewers as our "kids at Christmas," remember: every present you give in terms of model parameters will require effort on everybody's part, like finding the screwdriver to install a AA battery for that "fun little toy."

I both like and say accurate & nice things about almost all people, let's call that the 99.9% I talk to a lot of people about other people, A high percentage of the people I talk to want to talk about the 0.1%. I value both honesty & pro-sociality Selection effects are crazy.

if my friends & colleagues knew how often i dial down/cut my own vocals in my music mixes, their heads would spin for multiple reasons.

asking for friend: would you worry about gossiping to a somebody who, because they're seen as "a gossiper," nobody else talks to?

The difference in 2000 between a "chair" and a "head" of a department: Chairs serve department Heads serve the Dean In 2024? Almost every department chair is treated like a head... But, only by deans Deans don't talk to faculty now. Some don't even share their email addresses

Ironically, the best kind of "snow day" for a professor is the one that occurs when classes are not YET in session, but faculty meetings have already begun. #YeahLetsMoveThatToZoom

To be clear, "To keep the presentation as succinct as possible" is ironic, because you could just write, "To keep the presentation succinct" instead.

We're about to lose power. I can just feel it. Nothing compared to what our friends and neighbors in Southern California are dealing with, though. #iceStorm

My student asked me today to explain observational equivalence in normal person terms. I thought for a few seconds and replied, "can you always distinguish self-deprecation and humble-bragging?"

Maggie Penn and I wrote a new paper that summarizes some of our recent theoretical findings about algorithms with an application to the use of AI in bureaucracies. Comments welcome, as always! dropbox.com/scl/fi/26clhmt…
