Last week, I was honored to share the stage and have an impassioned conversation with the elegant, DJ and meditation guru, Donna D’Cruz at The Gospel in Soho. The mantra at The Gospel is ‘light up the darkness,’ and I think we did just that.

Shimon Sarfati was like a son to me, and Light to the many people he came in contact with. He is missed by so many.

Love is eternal.

It has been at least 30 years since I have been back to this place, and yet it feels like it was just yesterday. This is where the Rav and I lived in Jerusalem in 1973. So many beautiful memories.

Yesterday on October 27, 2018 a man killed 11 people and wounded 6 in what is being reported as one of the deadliest attacks on Jews in the United States. “I just want to kill Jews,” he said. Hate in its many manifestations is the war the whole world is fighting against today.

It is not a matter of what group hatred is directed towards, nor what exclusions it demands. Our battle is not with whom, it is with what.

The pain of such hatred is felt by the families of these victims. As we send those families our thoughts and our prayers, let us also remember that we are all suffering in a world where hate is allowed to flourish, and that every day the price of that hatred grows.

I ask that in our prayers we also find a way in our everyday actions to expand the reach of our love beyond just that of our families and communities. May we open our hearts enough that our love reaches even those who are physically, emotionally and spiritually different from us.

Only love can stop hatred. As difficult as it is, we can use the pain of this moment, of this day, to expand rather than constrict our hearts and win our personal and global battle against hatred. I love you all.
