The last plenary karin verspoor (professor) RMIT University describes the "the good, the bad and the ugly" on #generativeAI. A fantastic overview of everything that is wrong, and great with genAI. The possibilities are endless, and they are both scary and exciting!

I was invited by Nature News & Views to comment on a paper recently published in nature by Sebastian Farquhar Jannik Kossen Lorenz Kuhn Yarin on "Detecting hallucinations in large language models using semantic entropy". My piece on LLMs "Fighting fire with fire" is here: rdcu.be/dLkVv

Researchers say AI could police AI to correct hallucinations. RMIT's karin verspoor (professor) says "fighting fire with fire" may have limits: singularityhub.com/2024/06/20/res…

Thanks to Dara Kerr for talking with me about the high climate cost of generative AI, Google's reneging on its climate goals, and the real existential crisis facing us on NPR Morning Edition today. npr.org/2024/07/10/nx-…

Opening keynote from Fiona Brinkman on Sensitive Sustainable Science. Brilliant to start #ISMB2024 on an #openscience topic, also covering the FAIR and CARE principles

Love that Fiona Brinkman is highlighting the importance of role models, diversity, and inclusion, with a shout-out to Terry Gaasterland for being visible at the 1998 ISMB right here in Montreal #ISMB2024

My new article: A new ‘AI scientist’ can write science papers without any human input. Here’s why that’s a problem. Philosopher of science interested in chatting? DM me. theconversation.com/a-new-ai-scien… via The Conversation - Australia + New Zealand

Today's NYT article by Yuval Harari repeats "GPT-4 Hired Task Rabbit Worker to Solve Captcha" story & concludes "This incident demonstrated that GPT-4 has the equivalent of a 'theory of mind'." Time to re-up my fact-check of this oft-repeated story. ⬇️

Every time I catch myself starting a sentence with "Certainly, ..." I worry that the recipient will think I wrote it with ChatGPT. #notabot

As I said at #WCRI2024 World Conf Research Integrity and last week at Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, #GenAI will enable bad actors in science to accelerate their contamination of scientific literature. This has broad repercussions for trust in science, and there is a significant human toll, as reflected here.
