Awesome work, and a reminder that even object vision is more than just ventral stream processing! Or: The fact that CNNs lack capacities of human *vision* need not invalidate them as models of the *ventral stream*.

Thrilled to have been part of this project! 🥳 My favorite part is the key point on interpretability of visual neurons: Evaluating feature-visualizations or top-responsive images is inherently subject to human perceptual biases

Happy to share that my work with Koen Nelissen (not on X) investigating crossmodal fMRI adaptation in the monkey pareito-frontal mirror neuron areas (the last project from my PhD!), is now published in Brain Sciences MDPI! mdpi.com/2076-3425/13/1…

Now published in final version in eLife - the journal: A computationally informed comparison between the strategies of rodents and humans in visual object recognition doi.org/10.7554/eLife.… This new article describes the latest study headed by Anna Schnell. 1/n

Exciting!🥳 Fits the emerging non-teleological view of neural selectivity & organization. Neurons serving specific tasks well ≠ them being specialized tools designed for those tasks. This challenges our view of 'functional specialization'—is that term still appropriate?🤯🤔

A very pertinent question in neuroscience (and AI): "do our preconceptions of how complex systems should work hinder our aim to understand the brain’s inner workings?"

Great to see this massive rigorous study by Will Xiao out! 🥳 Affirming that even anterior IT neurons are largely retinotopic feature encoders of current input 👌

Super pumped to announce that our new work “Face cells encode objects parts more than facial configuration of illusory faces” with Kasper Vinken, Akshay Jagadeesh and Marge Livingstone is now out in Nature Communications! doi.org/10.1038/s41467…

Kasper Vinken (@kasper_vinken) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Face cells don’t encode what they seem to! Their response to illusory faces is driven by local features (like small round parts), more than the holistic faceness we see. Congrats Saloni Sharma on this thorough study showing biases in interpreting neurons through our perception!
