A well deserved prize to Acemoglu, Johnson, and Robinson for the most important instrumental-variable regression of all time, in their 2001 Colonial Origins paper. Congratulations!

In March 2020 as covid-19 struck I was in UK govt. I had expertise in vaccine innovation financing so was quickly brought into policy decisions on UK domestic & international covid-19 vaccine policy. Domestically, the UK made a lot of good calls and we got vaccines early... 🧵

I have a massive conflict of interest here, but I cannot recommend IIES highly enough. Outstanding, curious colleagues, flat hierarchies, plenty of research time, vibrant atmosphere. And Stockholm is wonderful any time of the year. Apply!

One nice model of LLMs is that they make private knowledge public. I haven't seen an economic model written down in quite this form, is there a reference I'm missing? Suppose each person has a given level of productivity at each task, which reflects their knowledge, and

Running bilateral trade surplus/deficits with different countries is the way it should be. Trying to eliminate each one is simply stupid. I have a trade deficit with my grocer, a trade surplus with my employer. I am not sure it would be a great idea for me to work for my grocer.
