There can be many factors related to reduced eating & drinking in dementia. An over-stimulating environment, dentition, changed food preferences or even new appetite experience. It’s not always a swallowing disorder. Consider everything. #WithSLTuCan

All behaviour communicates something. Learning to read and understand another person’s needs takes time, consideration & empathy. We need to watch, to listen & to feel. #WithSLTuCan.

If you don’t follow AHPDementia, this is a great example of why you should. HCPC registered #AHPs giving practical advice we can all adopt to support people living with #dementia. A great tip & not something I do often. I will definitely be using this more in practice.

Photographing daily activities on your phone can support recall & serve as a useful conversation starter. Catalogue the day & label it together as a way of keeping track, reminiscing & sharing details together later. Show & tell. #WithSLTuCan

Modifying what we eat to match our capabilities isn’t always about puréeing & thickening. Sometimes it’s a slower pace, a smaller sip, an extra swallow, a better posture, a quieter room….endless possibilities to support preference & need. #WithSLTuCan

Delirium is a sudden, intense state of confusion that can happen for a variety of reasons. Try to keep your sentences shorter for clarity, stay calm & present, avoid disagreeing, use soothing distractions & seek urgent medical attention. #WithSLTuCan

Post-diagnostic support strategies for word finding difficulties may include word descriptions or accessing a notebook/whiteboard/phone where key names are stored. When we can't change someone's name, we need a place to look it up. #WithSLTuCan

Total communication is an opportunity to use everything to convey a message. Combine speech with writing, drawing, gesture/ mime, pointing, tone of voice & facial expression - even single words this way just mean more. Bring it all! #WithSLTuCan

Sensory changes in dementia can affect eating & drinking. Try offering strong flavours or alternating temperatures to stimulate swallowing. Remember that a clean mouth before & after meals is essential too. #WithSLTuCan

Try taking extra time & space for communication. Overwhelm happens easily if we say too much, too quickly or if it's a noisy room or a big group of people. It can feel like too much to process. Offer time, pause more, slow down, make space. #WithSLTuCan

Swallowing food & drink is a complex sequence of movements. The sequence requires precision timing, strength & sensation. Minor breakdowns in the sequence are common to all and increase with age & illness. Understanding the mechanism can help. #WithSLTuCan

Humans are hardwired for connection. Even without words, moments of connection are vital. Eye contact, gesture, smiling, handshakes, waving, singing, dancing, sitting, being. Connection is key. #WithSLTuCan

Can you offer more time & space for communication ?Stop - slow down, check context & what's going on. Look - consider facial expressions, eye contact or gestures . Listen - repeat words you hear, notice tone, connect. Stop, look & listen.#WithSLTuCan

Mealtimes force us to process multiple factors all at once. Cooking smells, kitchen noises, the feeling of cutlery, how our food looks, tastes & feels. We invest all our senses in a single meal. Take time to consider the senses. #WithSLTuCan
