I met this morning with the new Ambassador to the Holy See, Keith Pitt. A significant appointment for him, at a possible ‘transitional’ moment for the Church.

What a lovely surprise in the mail today: letters from grade 4 students from St Francis Catholic Primary School in Tannum Sands (QLD). So many nice messages and good wishes for Pope Francis. I know he'll be moved when I share these with him at our first meeting.

From the Hill to Palazzo Madama (the Italian Senate) where I was delighted to meet with the Hon Francesco Giacobbe, Senator of the Italian Republic, whose overseas constituency comprises Australia. Great exchange on shared priorities with our Embassy, including safeguarding.

Together we mourn the passing of Pope Francis today, Easter Monday. I’m blessed to have witnessed his last public appearance yesterday at St Peter’s. He will be remembered as a Pope that wanted to be among the people, even in his final hours.

This weekend we gathered to bid Pope Francis a final farewell, together with nearly half a million mourners lining the streets of Rome. I accompanied our delegation led by the Governor General, the Hon Sam Mostyn AC, Senator the Hon Don Farrell, and the Hon Michael McCormack.

Also from Melbourne, the recently-retired Anglican Archbishop of that city, Philip Freier, who I was pleased to learn had also spent many years in my hometown of Bundaberg.

At this busy time, my team at the Australian Embassy to the Holy See worked around the clock with our Embassy to Italy to ensure our delegation was part of this historic event. Our attention now turns to the conclave and the election of a successor to Pope Francis.

And so it begins. I was with Cardinals this morning at mass before they entered the conclave to start voting on who will be the next leader of the Catholic Church. Australians will be following with interest, as will many millions around the world.

Best of luck to Go-Jo, the Australian entry to Eurovision 2025, at the semifinal tonight. My team and I had so much fun meeting “the Milkshake man” in Rome a few weeks ago. Do us proud, Go-Jo! 🇦🇺#Eurovision2025
