We’re ready for more amazing science at #SfN23. 🎉 If you’re interested in the relationship between anatomical connections and functional connectivity between the human hippocampus and cortex, check out Marshall Dalton’s new work at poster WW3 tomorrow afternoon from 1-5pm! 🧠

A new grant will allow neuroscience researcher Ana Daugherty, Ph.D., to test her hypothesis that diminished energy production by cell mitochondria, along with inflammation, cause the accumulation of iron in the brain and subsequent cognitive decline. ➡️ go.wayne.edu/ana-tw

Happy #SubfieldWednesday HSGers, Our questionnaire relating to the hippocampal tail segmentation protocol is live! Your feedback will help to revise and improve a draft protocol for defining hippocampal tail boundaries. Responses are requested by Monday January 8, 2024. 🍤

Was a wonderful visit to CVL to catch up on the phenomenal work happening there, and to share my work on brain iron accumulation in the Detroit Aging Brain Study.

Happy to have this QC guide out in the world as a preprint. My hope is that it can provide guidance both to researchers currently studying hippocampal subfields and to those just getting started. 🫶🍤🧠 Many thanks to Ana M Daugherty for her support of this massive effort, too.

Our 2023 Recap newsletter is live! We reflect on the past year’s activities and progress, and note things to come in 2024 including the first training on the harmonized protocol for subfields in hippocampal body (registration details go live Feb 1, 2024)! hippocampalsubfields.com/2024/01/29/hsg…

It also includes an important reminder that the deadline to complete the hippocampal tail protocol survey is extended to this Wednesday, January 31! We encourage labs who have not yet completed it to do so to have as many labs represented as possible. hippocampalsubfields.com/2023/12/01/fee…

Registration is now open for our first training on the harmonized protocol for subfields in hippocampal body! This 2-day training opportunity will take place April 11-12, 2024 in Toronto, ON prior to CNS. Space is limited. Visit our website for details: hippocampalsubfields.com/2024/02/01/reg…

Useful perspective. There are differences in power & sample requirements for feasibility/reliability vs validation vs applied study. Power depends on sample size AND reliability. Invest in reliability to make our research feasible with smaller N without compromising validity.

Hi HSGers! We are developing the automated atlas set for the harmonized protocol. Our goal is a representative atlas and we need your help! 🌍🧠 Additional scans from middle-aged adults, children & patient cases are needed. Please see link for more info! hippocampalsubfields.com/2024/04/19/add…

We anticipate that our paper on quality control (QC) will be an incredibly helpful resource for those of you doing any type of MRI segmentation work. For those doing hippocampal subfield work, we cover common segmentation errors and offer practical guidance on the topic of QC.
