(2/5) But this isn’t a surprise. "There’s never been a time when immigration detention hasn’t been deadly," said Anthony Enriquez, our VP of US Advocacy & Litigation. "So it’s inevitable that the more people we detain, the more people are going to die."

(3/5) We don't need detention to run a fair and fast immigration system. Federal programs that connect immigrants with legal and social services, like the Case Management Pilot Program, ensure a 100% appearance rate in immigration court and are cheaper than detention.

(4/5) But ICE is instead funneling billions of tax dollars to new private prison contracts, holding immigrants in camps in Guantanamo, and now opening “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Everglades, expanding a deadly system with impunity.

(5/5) People are dying in cages built with our tax dollars. We must stop normalizing death as a consequence of detention, and start holding ICE and DHS accountable.
