Between 11 and 20% of our time is lost to computer frustration. At #chi2024, at 10 o'clock in room 324, I will document this using Morten Hertzum's and my ACM TOCHI paper and discuss what to do about it.

Some of the HCC group at the Dept. of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen (DIKU - Department of Computer Science, UCPH) made it to #CHI2024 and had a great time. Thanks! To join next year's picture, we are hiring in health informatics and CS generally this year; ping me for more details.

New paper out in IJHCS! Aske Mottelson, Kasper Hornbæk, and I found that demand characteristics influence experimental outcomes in HCI. We find that when participants guess the experimenter's hypothesis, they tend to behave and respond in ways that match those guesses.

Kasper Kasper Hornbæk talked about the theory crisis in HCI*. My view: AI is the cause. “LLM accessories” won't do it, HCI needs to renew its theories, methods & models to center on human-AI interaction. Prove that they work better than trial and error. * tinyurl.com/2p9hu7fv

In HCI, everyone knows what a user interface is. It's the... umm... the thing between the user and the computer? I and Kasper Hornbæk grappled with this question for over 7 years and finally have a paper out: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

I am seeking 1-2 PhD students and 1-2 postdocs to work on theory in HCI, say, how the field uses theory, how to make theories more impactful in HCI, and how to develop better technology w theory. DL is June 9th, see shorturl.at/4FTkQ and shorturl.at/6DlA5. 🙏 🇩🇰🎓😃
