This photo taken by Rod MacKenzie of Hilton of Cadboll Farm shows the quern (meal mill) brought by an ancestor to Hilton by boat after being cleared from near Helmsdale. Must have been very valuable to make such a journey - broke two wheelbarrows being moved to where it sits now.

A few scenes from the old salmon fishing station at Port Grant, Strathy. Full of traces of the lives & labour that happened there: a winch for lifting boxes of fish to the top of the cliffs, rotting cobles, graffiti on the pier and even an old creel made of bent willow branches.

This is excellent from Fraser MacDonald "It could become the ruin that Scotland needs – an elective monument to land reform, to the changed values and redrawn priorities of a nation looking forward." theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

The Scottish Government has accepted our demands for rent controls - as well as cracking down on evictions and guaranteeing better tenants’ rights. Now, it’s down to tenants’ organising to force them to go all the way.

Been on a bit of a whirlwind tour round the lower reaches of Scottish football recently... making up for lost time I suppose. Yesterday I watched Halkirk United FC beat Thurso in the Caithness derby. Earlier: Clydebank FC, Pollok FC and the mighty Maryhill FC.

A wonderfully open-hearted, perceptive look at the North Coast 500 phenomenon from John MacPherson. His words and images touch on some of the uncomfortable but ultimately important questions raised by tourism… how we see other places, and how we see our own.

Vivid, nuanced writing by @adamweymouth here in the stand-upmagazine.com about the fate of wild salmon and its associated fisheries in Scotland. He captures the painful complexity of issues at work here - conservation, environmental justice, cultural heritage - and the human impact.

You rarely hear from mothers of Russian soldiers. This lady came up to us at an anti-war protest in Moscow, desperate for the safety of her 22 yr old son. She told us there were only 10 men left in his regiment. If there are voices Putin fears, it’s these

Caithness was at its best on top of Morven this weekend. A ptarmigan still in its winter clothes; the sun coming out to play, casting a mighty shadow over Braemore; endless views to the west. After a chilly overnight in Wag, back via the Langwell in the sunshine the next day.

Lovely day for Hibernian in Ayr. Some rare kind of magic about a packed Somerset Park in the Scottish Cup - unbelievable portion sizes on the fish supper too.

"The Heart of a Community" (the exhibition I've worked on over recent months) opens tonight. After the closure of Leith St Andrew's as a place of worship, the exhibition celebrates the church's past and builds towards keeping it in community hands. Info: leithstandrewstrust.org/2025/02/03/the…

"The Heart of a Community" exhibition ended last weekend, marking the close of my work w/ Leith St. Andrew's Trust. Been a pleasure gathering memories of LStA Church, sharing this living history w/ the wider public, and engaging local people in the community buyout process.
