The whole family is entranced by @NellytheWillow ‘s sumptuous book on the #Pinwill sisters, three remarkable late Victorian women, daughters of a vicar, who became professional #woodcarvers & whose work is simply stunning 💫🙌💫🙌💫

A big heart for St. Valentine’s Day! The ‘King and Queen’ carving from St. Mary’s Church at Wirksworth in Derbyshire. The carving is possibly Anglo-Saxon in date. #ValentinesDay2022

#Twitterhistorians I’m wondering if anyone knows anyone who might be willing to consider reading one/a couple of chapters of All the Queen’s Jewels with a view to giving me some feedback. I’d be very grateful if so 🙏🏻

#Lammas is ‘hlaf-maesse’ (loaf-mass) in #OldEnglish & is referred to in the C9th #AngloSaxon Chronicle. On 1st Aug bread made from the first harvest was blessed in church. This bread was then used magically to protect new grain. #SuperstitionSat Furlongs, Eric Ravilious, 1934

1st August is #Lammas, a harvest festival. It was believed that the protective ‘corn spirit’ took refuge in the last few stalks of grain, and a ‘Corn Dolly’ was made from them to house her over winter. The ‘dolly’ was ploughed back into the first new furrow at #Imbolc. #folklore

And so to Bluntisham. The writer Dorothy L Sayers grew up here. Her father, the rector, was a bell-ringing enthusiast, and became the model for the Reverend Theodore Venables in her book The Nine Tailors, though the church of Fenchurch St Paul is not based on this church.
