🚨Latest podcast! Rachel Reeves’s U-turn on winter fuel payments: will it be enough to undo the damage done? Plus, we look ahead to this week’s spending review as negotiations with ministers go down to the wire. And after the party chair dramatically quit only to

Breaking news overnight: affordable housing looks like a big winner from the spending review. Government funding is doubling to nearly *£4bn* a year, and social rents will go up for the next 10 years. Everything affordable housebuilders wanted. theguardian.com/politics/2025/…

Richard Burgon asks in the House of Commons whether the govt might u-turn on cuts to incapacity benefits. Rachel Reeves shakes her head and mutters “no” under her breath.

ChX again says increased defence spending paid for by reducing overseas aid. Not really the case. Almost all the extra defence spending is capital. The overseas aid cut is really being used to top up day-to-day spending of other govt depts

More silverware for Lobby XI as we lifted the annual Caplan Cup after beating Westminster Wanderers Football Club 2-1. Goals from Matt Dathan & Oscar Tami before he went and got himself sent off 🤷‍♂️ Still pulled through in the end. Kiran Stacey and Dathan continue their 100% winning streak 💯⚽🏆

EXC: Important moment in the convoluted story of the Rosebank mega oil field. Govt to kickstart the application process again today. Expect another big internal fight if Labour gives this the go-ahead: theguardian.com/environment/20…

Punchy quote on the Welfare Bill from Imran Hussain, a Labour MP who was once on Starmer's front bench: “We risk walking straight into a political disaster — one that could become Labour’s poll tax moment."

I spoke to the The Guardian’s @KiranStacey on the Politics Weekly UK podcast about the Universal Credit & PIP Bill. 100+ MPs now oppose it. These cuts could push 400,000 more into poverty—incl. 50,000 children. We must scrap them. 🎧 Listen: tinyurl.com/UCPIP

EXC: Keir Starmer has offered "massive concessions" on the welfare bill which look to have won the support of key rebels and could save him from his first defeat as PM. theguardian.com/politics/2025/… By Pippa Crerar and me

Leading rebels told the Guardian they'd been promised significant changes to the planned cuts which could cost govt several billion over next few years but look set to shore up PM’s precarious authority. “They’ve offered massive concessions, which should be enough to get the

Our latest #PoliticsWeekly podcast: How the welfare bill went wrong. Join me & ⁦⁦Kiran Stacey⁩ to discuss the government’s partial u-turn on disability benefit cuts, if it’s enough to win over rebels & how damaging it is to Keir Starmer & team. theguardian.com/politics/audio…

Kiran Stacey (@kiranstacey) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Very important clarification just now from Liz Kendall: the 4-point process for disability payments (the thing that has caused most of the backlash) *WILL* be implemented next November. Any changes to the system will take longer to implement.

Kiran Stacey (@kiranstacey) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Almost EVERY Labour MP speaking in today's debate about the welfare changes has made one single point. If the 4-point system is happening in Nov 26, then how serious is the Timms review into PIP? This feels like the faultline that could trigger a lot of rebellions.

Kiran Stacey (@kiranstacey) 's Twitter Profile Photo

For those tracking today's welfare debate: the first intervention from possible Labour rebel is from Polly Billington, and is highly supportive of the govt. Interesting signal of sot-left opinion.

Kiran Stacey (@kiranstacey) 's Twitter Profile Photo

BREAKING: Govt removes the central point of the welfare bill - the cuts to Pips. Instead changes to the system will only happen after the Timms review. As Pippa Crerar and Jessica Elgot here: theguardian.com/politics/2025/…

Ruth Curtice, CEO of the Resolution Foundation: “The upshot of all the concessions this week is it will now not make any net savings in 2029-30."
