Finished my first ultracycling off-road event: Taunus Bikepacking, 1000km of all surfaces, from tarmac to technical trails, no support. 20km climbing. 5d5hrs, avg sleep about 3hrs / day (2 hotels, 3 in the open). 31th place out of 95 starters.

At #SIGMOD and oh boy PODS talks aren't easy to follow! I might have been out of research for a little too long.

7yrs since I last attended an academic conference and pretty pleased to see that beamer is still by and large how people create slides! some things never change :) Thinking of beamer and tikz gives me heebie-jeebies

I must admit I don't always find invited talks by extremely senior academics useful (or even find them sad sometimes) but today's #SIGMOD talk by Margo Seltzer on ML & databases is so good. Some bits about broken experimentation practices are relevant beyond academia.
