Useful to keep in mind Nietzsche's insight on the origin of a thing vs its 'meaning' or 'purpose': "whatever exists... is again and again reinterpreted to new ends, taken over, transformed, and redirected... all subduing and becoming master involves fresh interpretation."

Just found out that Sikh historian JS Grewal has sadly passed away at the age of 95. Came across his book 'The Sikhs of Punjab' in my Uni library in the mid 90s, a complete game changer for a confused teenager like me trying to understand my Sikh heritage. Still refer to the book

A massive loss to Sikh scholarship. Managed to write on almost every topic concerning Sikhi; from treatises on Master Tara Singh and Maharaja Ripudaman Singh of Nabha to summaries of Sikh history.

Prof JS Grewal (1927-2022) was an eminent writer and historian. I am blessed to have met him, when my father was a fellow in IIAS, Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla. Dr JS Grewal became the director of IIAS, after retiring as VC of GNDU, Asr. His books will guide us.

Heard about passing of JS Grewal, Sikhism’s most eminent scholar. Read his books on Master Tara Singh and Maharaja Nabha and clearly has the best knowledge of Akali politics Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee should confer the Panth Ratan on him for his promotion of Sikh history through literature
