with Bill Hatcher on guitar, Robert Strickland on piano, and Bill Wilder on drums. Great combo. I had a solo on a tune called "When Love Was King" and I'd rather be clever than get stuck improvising, so i based my solo on MLK's favorite hymn: Precious Lord, Take My Hand.

Had a great meeting yesterday with Amy Wilson, who conducts the Atl Phil orch, about privilege and responsibility, and about sharing our platform with those whose voices need to be heard.

Time to start a new piece. Where does it come from? If the need comes before the inspiration, i dig through a file full of various sketches to see if maybe i've already had an idea worth developing. Jury still out.

The early stages of composing music from scratch are unsettling, with no hook pestering my brain yet, no form to pour notes into. All tunnel, no light. I just have to keep exploring every germ and tangent, visibility limited, not oriented to any horizon, until something clicks.

Had my first exp teaching composition to a classroom filled with middle and high school students yesterday. As far as I can recall, my presentation was mostly incoherent rambling mixed with audio samples of Pachelbel, Everly Bros, and Tool.

Playing a whole program of Mozart is so good for your soul. It's something big orchestras rarely get to do anymore. The ASO concert tomorrow night is being simulcast and streamed and stuff, if you can't make it to the hall but you need something for your soul, tune in.
