Both brother and sister are teachers! Marvin (5th grade P.E. teacher) and Victoria (2nd grade teacher ) are leading their classrooms with passion, purpose, and love. As their former teacher, it fills me with pride to see them excited and excelling in this profession.

Denita and I have shared nearly 30 years as colleagues — and moments like this remind me just how quickly time flies. We were there when the father graduated, and now we’ve had the joy of watching his daughter walk across the same stage, today. Congratulations, Zaire!

There’s something extra special about seeing a young person head off to college — and even more so when they choose your alma mater! Huge congratulations to Winston on his graduation. Wishing you all the best as you start your next chapter at The ⁦College of Wooster⁩

We needed each other I’ve never spent more time in school with a student. It wasn’t always easy—misunderstandings, tough love, and growth—but it mattered. He pushed me, I pushed back. Now he’s off to college. Proud of him and excited for what’s next.

Wrapped up the school year by reading through student evaluations, one of the most valuable parts of my growth as a teacher. Their feedback, both kind and constructive, helps me reflect and improve. Grateful for student voices and the opportunity to keep learning.

It’s such an honor when a former student and player invites you to lunch. This is the true joy of being a teacher and coach: witnessing the growth, strength, and success of the young people you’ve had the privilege to walk alongside.

Being recognized by your community hits different. Grateful to the African American Community Fund for the honor—but even more moved seeing former students now being honored for their service. I once taught them. Now, I learn from them. Full circle.

Thank you to Jarian Kerekes and the Equitable team for creating a space to uplift and center the importance of teacher wellness. Being in community with some of the most brilliant educators I know was not only inspiring—it was the reset I didn’t know I needed. Equitable

Last week, I had the joy of reconnecting with some of the 2022 State Teachers of the Year cohort. I’m truly appreciative of these incredible educators. We built a lasting friendship grounded in our shared belief that all students deserve to be seen, heard, and valued.

Less than 2% of educators in this country are Black men. Honored to stand alongside these incredible, award winning educators from Massachusetts, Missouri, and Pennsylvania—men who lead with passion, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to our students. Representation matters.

In the later seasons of The Cosby Show, Theo mentored a student with dyslexia. By sharing his own struggle, he built trust and changed a life. That’s the kind of teacher I strive to be—one who connects through vulnerability and lifts students up.
