Signature Calabash moment. If you know, you know. Maximum respect Kwame Dawes #calabash2025 📸: Gareth Cobran

“Perhaps this will become my symbol—two chairs, domestic in their placement side by side, so two sisters may see each other’s eyes, but able, still, to stretch their un-stockinged legs far out over the well-kept rug—” —Kwame Dawes (Kwame Dawes), “The Exile Remembers His Sisters”

the Calabash Literary Festival is a gem. There are more important and higher profile literary festivals in the world, but few in a more luscious location. Skip the liquor; the vibe alone was intoxicating. Huge congrats to Justine Henzell and Kwame Dawes. What an achievement!

It’s a good one! My partner in crime, comrade in arms, co-parent of Calabash Kwame Dawes #Calabash2025

...poetry has existed in Africa as long as it’s existed anywhere else, and to say otherwise is erasure. To archive it, to organize it, to pay attention to it is to enact something profoundly humane. It’s a resistance to erasure--Kwame Dawes
