Survey time! Are there any full-time #PhD students out there who are more than a year in and are really enjoying what they’re doing day-to-day? If so: which country are you in, what are you researching, and why don’t you hate it yet?

The longer that I'm in tech the more time I spend saying variations on "let's back up a step (or 20) and see if there's another way to solve your problem". This may just be a getting older thing.

A little PSA about ASL for ‘Thank you’! I’ve had all of these signed to me accidentally haha. And when I sign thank you to non signers, sometimes they thought I was blowing a kiss to them. T_T #ASL #AmericanSignLanguage

Advice for conf speakers: When someone you care for is speaking, sit in the first row. Be there for them. Laugh at their jokes, _actually_ watch the talk (Twitter can wait), make yourself visible for them. Be the audience you'd like to have, and next time you will have it.

I chatted with a friend today about orders of magnitude of payouts. He suggested "a meal", "a car", "a house", "retirement". My partner's first royalty payment was in the "stick of gum" category. My first one was "a meal".

It's another example of what I wrote about in WIRED a few months ago -- which is that if you're looking for one area in tech that's consistently a font of good news, it's clean-energy tech: wired.com/story/the-sunn…
