To me this is an under-recognized aspect of the Finland/U.S. comparison re: early years. Relative simplicity of Finnish language (“shallowness of orthography”) is a huge advantage, much easier to wait on reading instruction. Still right about importance of play though I think.

This is exactly why a systematic phonics program, which notes exceptions, is needed. Because of the complexity of English sound symbol relationships children also need differentiated time and instruction to grasp these and make language, reading, and spelling and connections.
