Today started with a discussion about the RNCM's pop Session Orchestra's instrumental arrangements, & ended with rehearsals of new student pieces for the BBC Phil. It's good to think about how the varied orchestral composition and arranging options can speak to each other more.

Last Thursday Leonard turned one, on Saturday Emilia turned 13, tomorrow Walter turns 3, and on Sunday we have a birthday part for the boys. Birthday season nearly done.

Belter of a comp seminar today from Nick Reyland— composing for screen+some provocations about context & cultural signposting. Music—from Empire Strikes Back to Three Colours Blue via (inevitably) some Zimmer, a 1960s advert for Flake chocolate, & a hearty dose of Rick & Morty.

Really looking forward to this. I've made a new version: Borneo rivers (3), which blends graphics and more trad. notation. Caroline, the Camerata, and the Royal Northern College of Music students sound amazing. I'm also incredible happy to be programmed alongside recent alum James Weatherley-Buss.

Less than ten days until the premiere of 'the curious codes of silence'. This piece is inspired by Paul Auster's 'The Locked Room' the final part of his 'The New York Trilogy'. So grateful to commissioner & soloist Zubin Kanga to Explore Ensemble & to Britten-Pears Arts!

What an absolute pleasure to have a day rehearsing with Zubin Kanga & Explore Ensemble yesterday. Wonderful, detailed, sincere music making. New 30-minute piece for piano/electric piano/lumatone and ensemble premiere at the Aldeburgh Festival: 1530 on Tuesday 18 June!

Half way through the first Royal Northern College of Music Session Orchestra where the student composers have done all the arrangements and they have done an absolutely fantastic job.

The Explore Ensemble and Zubin Kanga presented an exciting afternoon of new music, including pieces by Dr Laura Bowler (Wells) and alex paxton, and first performances of work by Lara Agar and Larry Goves.
