Delighted to host our fringe event: Supported Housing and the NHS: Smarter Spend for Better Outcomes, at The Labour Party Conference this morning. Great to have colleagues from Royal College of Psychiatrists, East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT), and MP Ben Coleman on our panel, expertly chaired by Victoria Macdonald from Channel 4 News.
"Delayed discharge costs NHS £71m a year" says Ben Coleman, adding that "you have to have to treat mental health alongside housing, employment, benefits, all things local authorities are responsible for. The more we do in the community the less pressure on the NHS and A&Es."
Ben Coleman "Across the country, 1 in 10 patients in beds are clinically ready for discharge - this is where supported housing comes in" says Lade Smith of Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Ben Coleman Royal College of Psychiatrists Dr Lade Smith: "The people we can't get into hospitals, we have to move to out of area placements, often hundreds of miles away. These cost £164m a year. It's terrible for individuals, for services, and for the tax payer. We need to be investing in supported housing instead."
Ben Coleman Royal College of Psychiatrists Dr Leah White, speaking on our Barnsley Street Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre, run in partnership with East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) and the Tower Hamlets Mental Health Alliance: You don't always have to go to hospital in a crisis. There are alternatives which supported housing helps provide."
Ben Coleman Royal College of Psychiatrists East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) "At Barnsley Street, we are seeing drops in hospital admission and drops in lengths of stay from our early data" says Dr Leah White "this service follows people through their whole care journey - it's the NHS, Look Ahead and voluntary sector organisations from the THMH Alliance."
Ben Coleman Royal College of Psychiatrists East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) .Ben Coleman: "There is a renewed government commitment - we need multi year commissioning across sectors. The Health and Social Care Committee will be highlighting the value of integration."
