In an environment with appropriate infrastructure, patient selection, isolation, screening, and testing, elective orthopaedic surgery is safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, and associated with high patient satisfaction. online.boneandjoint.org.uk/doi/full/10.13… Bone & Joint Open #COVID19 #Orthopaedics

Achieved by making sensible decisions as part of a team with a unified philosophy. It’s not rocket surgery. The impact of this, worldwide, on potential reduction in revision rates and lifetime costs are fairly clear to see.

Overall, total hip #arthroplasty has a relatively low complication rate. However, surgeons find the posterior approach had a significantly lower overall complication rate compared with the anterior approach, with an equal #dislocation rate ow.ly/7BDH50BUp5B #hipsurgery

Cell therapies hold significant promise, however, despite advances in #research, there is growing concern about the increasing number of clinical centres making unwarranted claims or performing risky biological procedures ow.ly/GuvR50C2Vx2 #stemcells Iain Murray

So sad. Possibly the worst thing we ever did was name our surgery ‘elective’. It makes it sound expendable. Living with severe #hip and #knee arthritis is awful yet there is a ‘cure’. The NHS needs to protect its elective surgery with green sites. #medtwitter #orthotwitter

A third of patients waiting for Total Hip Replacement are in a state worse than death. They can be helped with surgery. This new study from The Bone & Joint Journal shows twice as many patients are in this position as a year ago. Here is our joint statement with BOA @baskonline

The UK is, yet again, facing widespread cancellations of elective surgery. Forever seen as the easy target and release valve at times of pressure. Our patients are suffering, mentally as well as physically and so are those around them.
