Breaking my silence on here to share that my colleagues and I are forming a union, Connecticut News Guild, with NewsGuild-CWA. Today we asked Hearst Connecticut Media Group to voluntarily recognize us.

This isn’t personal. Most of us like our jobs and our managers. But we deserve pay that matches the cost of living in Connecticut, workloads in line with our job descriptions and input into important decisions that affect our daily lives.

Here's why I want a union: I've watched way too many talented reporters leave their jobs because they couldn't afford life. Reporting shouldn't just be for the privileged or the impoverished. Also, teamwork makes the dream work.

I LOVE my job. I love this line of work, and it's been an absolute privilege to tell the stories of CT's food scene for the better part of two decades. Many of us feel journalism is more of a calling than a profession. But that doesn't mean we should accept less.

Local media is the bedrock of our democracy, but too many staff struggle to make ends meet. I support the Hearst Connecticut staff’s advocacy for higher wages and better working conditions, and encourage all parties to enter good faith negotiations to address these issues.
