Analytical calculations and numerical sampling reveals the effects of spatially disordered growth on buckling instability of elastic rods, showing how biological systems could trigger or avoid buckling and thereby control a key driver of morphogenesis. šŸ”— go.aps.org/4f6C2xr

It's great to see this now published Physical Review E! doi.org/10.1103/PhysRe… See below for a thread summarising the preprint - but of course you should read the paper for some solid mechanics...

I haven’t tweeted much lately here, where, when it comes to #science, dog died. But this seems to be in the spirit of the place. Last year, I vouched to ā€œmake the beer hour great againā€ MPI-CBG Dresden and I am doing it. Actually, quite enjoying the process… 🤠

Both #cell shape changes and cell wedging drive cell sheet folding in green algae, this study shows. Stresses from outside the tissue’s plane are associated with changes in the cell’s shape not due to cell wedging, indicating an adaptive response. šŸ”— go.aps.org/4hn6fsR
