A very nice example of how good science is done—through robust argument and counterargument. Here @stevestuwill and Lewis Halsey respond to a critique on an earlier paper, in which they presented a nuanced analysis of gender imbalance in STEM occupations: buff.ly/3OnrQpe

We can lose #weight by eating less or by #exercising more. Given that both approaches reduce energy availability, shouldn't they result in the same metabolic responses? Colleagues José L Areta and Karsten Koehler reviewed the literature to find out... #metabolism The Royal Society

There's more variation in energy expenditure between men than women. What about other physiological characteristics? Eimear Dolan , Gabriel Esteves and I ran analyses on a very large dataset... royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs… The Royal Society

Last month, I sat down in the Uni of Roehampton podcast studio to record for BBC Radio 4's "Just One Thing - With Michael Mosley". In this episode (#3), we discussed some of the effects of exercising in colder conditions. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

We measured the energy costs of pigeons to fly, then loaded them with a weight and measured them again. The result: Barely any change in energy expenditure! We argue this is because pigeons fly at high speeds where drag is the major cost. nature.com/articles/s4159… The Royal Society

The Uni of Roehampton physiology labs were the location for this test of former soldier Jordan Wylie - how does heat affect his body during rest and exercise?

Our new paper uncovers an enviable ability of birds: they can lose #weight even when they are eating a processed #food #diet AND even when they reduce their #exercise levels at the same time! We investigated why, for over 150 years, zoologists have reported males of species to be more varied (intra-individually) than females. Is it simply because, most commonly, the male of a species is bigger? doi.org/10.1098/rsbl.2… Video: youtu.be/615YvavevQE BiologyLetters

As nations get richer, people get taller. They also get less varied in their heights. But these changes happen more in men than in women. Why? To find out, start by watching a short video summarising our new paper, here: youtu.be/WkgaByVx4Wg?si… BiologyLetters

The consensus about flying in flocks is that it's energetically expensive to do. Our reassessment of the data suggest that this isn't true. Find out more in our new paper: doi.org/10.1098/rsbl.2…. BiologyLetters
