3/7 The Chinese Party-State employs a comprehensive system—encompassing universities, publishers, and embedded party committees—to control academic output through political, social and financial means. This fosters very effective self-censorship in both research topics &findings.

4/7 The result? Many research topics have gradually vanished from Chinese social science, a trend that accelerated after 2013. Some omissions, like democracy, authoritarianism, political rights, and participation, are less surprising. Others are more unexpected, for example:
