Seven-year-old Madelyn Daigle, a St. Jude patient who was battling a rare form of cancer, was helped through chemotherapy with encouraging messages from the University of Alabama women’s softball team. Marlo Thomas shares how Madelyn is doing now.

In 1986, I was completing freshman year of college and majoring in broadcast journalism. I was discouraged bc my goal was to do onfield reporting for football. I changed my major after many declarations that men dominated that field. I love seeing so many women on the field now.

As a professor in a College of Education, my science methods course humanizes teaching. Content is not always the most important thing teachers will teach students and modeling how to address differences in opinions through discourse based on evidence is an important life skill.

Someone asked me about my dream job. I always wanted to be a sports broadcaster on the sidelines. Because there weren't many opportunities for women in that field in 1985/86, I bounced from major to major, dropped out for a while, dropped back in and fell in love with teaching.

Job well done! It has been a pleasure, sir.
