People in the comments are losing their minds over milk and cookies being offered to college kids. You’d think it was coke and ketamine.

So yes, these shoes are "ugly." They look alien, bulbous, and bulky. But they're an offbeat Japanese version of a classic American hunting shoe. To me, they tell a story about how classic American style has been preserved by enthusiasts in Japan who love the look more than us.

To be a fly on the wall in Tehran this morning: Khamenei lived long enough to see his entire regional project go up in flames. But the mood is hardly more cheerful for many Arab regimes: Assad's swift collapse exposes the myth of "authoritarian stability" in the region.

I recently spoke with fashion critic and StyleZeitgeist founder Eugene Rabkin, who lamented the "deskilling of consumers." We all know about the deskilling of workers—the way automation or division of labor can deskill workers such as craftsmen, putting them on an assembly line.

When it comes to the US government's involvement in clothing, perhaps the most important has been the creation of American jobs. US gov contracts still require that clothes be made at US factories. This has helped prop up plants like the former Hickey Freeman factory.

Meanwhile, for people who aren't Howard Lutnick's mother in law, if their SS check doesn't come in, they can't buy groceries and gas.

Can you imagine the episode of Homeland? Where some of Carrie’s people are blown up because some political guy texted the details of imminent strikes that were DEFINITELY NOT WAR PLANS?

RIP to my friend and former colleague, Richard Vines. He was so kind and always a treat to work with. I had the luck of editing much of his output from roughly 2015 to 2020 and wanted to share some of my favourites of his work (thread) standard.co.uk/going-out/rest…

He wanted to travel and write so I encouraged him to visit Italy and explore local pizzas because of course. So he and Francesco Mazzei took off in a Maserati across the south for this beauty. 2/x bloomberg.com/news/features/…

He loved great restaurants but also lifted up the marginalised and unheard. Here he visited a restaurant in Brixton prison where the inmates are taught culinary skills for life after incarceration. 3/x. bloomberg.com/news/features/…

People assume that all Chinese-made clothing is low quality, but this simply isn't the case. China makes everything from crappy Shein and Temu clothes to these wonderfully hand-knitted shawl collar cardigans from RRL. The quality of these RRL garments are tremendous.

So to answer the question: who's paying $90 for a button-up shirt and $628 for a jacket? The person getting married and wants to look their best in photos they'll cherish for a lifetime. However, they're also budget conscious and wants the best value for money.
