Let’s dream a bit. How would you dramatically reorg biotech research / drug development to make dramatically faster progress towards curative therapies? (Don’t say “use AI”, hypothesis/candidate generation under current structure isn’t a bottleneck)

After over a year of incubating, I’m excited to share a new project inspired by a ~decade of in vivo drug discovery experience 🧬 Artemis is a Focused Research Organization (FRO) to establish alternative, naturally physiologically human-like animal species for complex disease

The time of day that immunotherapy is given seems to really, really matter. Why? note: a recent randomized study (quote given blow) presented at a major cancer conference found that giving immunotherapy in the morning instead of the evening led to a 2x higher survival rate.

does anyone know of a cool biotech/bio-ml startup should i write about? something that has a fun fix of - is doing something very unique and valuable but… -it is hard to understand why it is unique or valuable i havent covered one in 5~ months and im getting antsy about it

I would extend this to applied ML/AI as well. Less focus on bean counting papers & glam status of journals & more focus on making datasets, tools, methods, analyses that have long-lasting real impact on the fields that we work in.

Really pleased to share what I have been working on for 2 months: 🇬🇧 UK SovAI are today announcing our £8m seed investment into OpenBind - A consortium that will actually make AI for drug discovery great by generating 500k experiment protein-ligand complexes!! Explainer 🧵 (1/n)

How concerned should we be about AIxBio? We surveyed 46 bio experts and 22 superforecasters: If LLMs do very well on a virology eval, human-caused epidemics could increase 2-5x. Most thought this was >5yrs away. In fact, the threshold was hit just *months* after the survey. 🧵

By this time next year, either: 🏆 we'll have engineered PETase enzymes actually work industrially & recycle plastic ... or we'll know that AI-for-proteins is still a bit underbaked 😜 Excited to see what happens!!!! 😬 Spread the word ⬇️

I just released an essay series on a topic I've been thinking about, on and off, for a few years: What does AI progress mean for medical progress? Many people working on AI dream it will help cure cancer and prevent disease. I wanted to create a more specific roadmap:
