Love having amazing colleagues and VIROLOGY? UW-Madison is looking to hire a new faculty member who loves working on viruses as much as we do! jobs.hr.wisc.edu/en-us/job/5091…

NVX-CoV2373 demonstrated overall efficacy of 90.4% (95% CI: 82.9, 94.6), achieving its primary endpoint. 77 cases were observed: 63 in the placebo group & 14 in the vaccine group. All cases in the vaccine group were mild.

In three weeks I move to İstanbul with the The Fulbright Program for nine months to study coral reef pathogens. When I tell people this they make a confused face. I just make another confused face back and shrug. Life is weird.

This paper came out recently, and it is HUGELY popular among anti-vaccine advocates who are using it to suggest that vaccines don't work It's also very fundamentally flawed. I'm a bit surprised it was published. Some thoughts 1/n

For the third time in three years I'm feeling overwhelmed by the state of the world. Today my doomscrolling was interrupted by this delightful article. I hope everyone can find their own few minutes of respite today; if able: rescue.org and savethechildren.org

Undergrads: wondering if going straight into a doctoral program is the right choice for you? I wrote a guide to #postbac opportunities in the STEM fields and why they can be great options! Check it out: bit.ly/3LOmsb6 Academic Chatter™

Read a paper today that relied on MOUNTAINS of fieldwork - 300,000+ samples collected. Field techs were only mentioned in the acknowledgements. It's wild that they weren't valued enough for coauthorship. Senior PIs shouldn't gatekeep authorship, esp with such large contributions!

Forever indebted to these people (+ others not pictured) at the Bilgin lab for welcoming me so warmly 9 months ago and for teaching me so much during my @FulbrightTurkey experience. Hadi görüşürüz 🇹🇷🧿 Next stop, Emory PBEE!

I read an older paper today about evolution of pathogens that specifically mentions monkeypox evolution in the context of waning smallpox vax immunity and occasional human transmission chains -- very strange feeling to be on the other side of an event they predicted.

A bit late on this, but I chatted with Hello PhD about postbacs on the latest episode. This podcast is an awesome resource for people in grad school and it was such a fun conversation. 10/10 would recommend! hellophd.com/2022/09/181-bu…

Someone please explain why some journals are still placing figures at the end of the paper. Who wants this? It makes every paper 100x harder to follow.

Passed my qualifying exam earlier this week! Considering asking everyone to refer to me as "Candidate Somsen" from now on, but "acolyte" also has a nice ring to it...
