Kids need to see the world in books,. Full stop. Including stories of present day immigrants—so that they can have narratives that can counter the lies shared by some in amplified places. These stories are important no matter where you live and who you are.

Today I’m thinking of what a gift and a journey it was being a first generation college student. Sadly, I used to feel ashamed, but now I am proud. Thinking of all of those kids starting their fall semesters and sending the proud vibes. ā¤ļø

Re-listening to Jan Hasbrouck talk about fluency. Love how she tells students to ā€œmake it sound like you talk so that your brain understands it. You want your brain to understand it.ā€ I’ve always said the first part but need to include the latter too!! podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/mel…

Another reminder as to why reading levels and leveling books are infective and not supported by research and have terrible consequences for most students particularly those who are at-risk or are vulnerable.

Power is fleeting. Respect is lasting. Reputation is not a function of wealth, fancy titles, or prestigious memberships. It's a matter of what we contribute and how we treat others. Admiration is earned through actions, not positions. The best way to be valued is to add value.

It’s been a rough start to the school year in NYC so I’m reposting this. It’s in the application where the learning sticks. I’m seeing lots of 40-min lessons where sts read and write less than 5 words. That doesn’t work. Implementing a flawed program w/ fidelity ensures failure.

My analogy for the care that needs to happen in implementing instruction: I spent 3 terrifying days in the hospital this year (Xmas!) b/c I went in for allergic reaction & the med that was supposed to help was given incorrectly. Right tool, right dose, imperfect implementation.

Guess what shiny, flashy, novel phonics activity we did today? We didn’t. We made words w magnetic letters & cookie sheets just as we will do 2x/week all year long. Keep routines & materials the same & focus on learning, even if it’s not as exciting to post on social media.
