People often tell me they find the ocean frightening, the raw power, the fear of the unknown, the crushing depths - but with knowledge one can find solace in this turbulent world.

I've had a lot of questions lately asking what it's like to swim with basking sharks. There is no fear - just awe and exhilaration. The feeling that what I am witnessing is one of lifes pure moments of the beauty and power of wild things. Maybe this clip will give you some idea!

The guillemot is often overlooked, with its more colourful neighbour, the puffin, garnering much of the attention. They are no less beautiful though. The individual at the front is described as a 'brideled' guillemot due to the white circle and flash around the eye.

Had some great #shark encounters over the last few weeks. The big boys an girls are on the scene now too with some 7m+ sharks - still smaller than the 12m max size these sharks can reach though.

Had an epic common dolphin superpod encounter yesterday. Always exhilarating to see these speed machines hunting at full pelt.

The lions's mane jellyfish, one of the most spectacular sights in Scottish waters. The huge bell and long tentacles pulse with colour and light, like some visitor from another world.

The #weather has been testing this 'summer' but we are still managing some great encounters with the basking #sharks. Good forecast today thankfully!

Hide and seek in the kelp with my seal buddy. Back in Oban now after just finishing a great freedive trip to end our main 'shark' season. One day off the water and I'm already getting restless to get back on, in or under water again.

Scottish lochs - you don't need mythical monsters when you've got animals as cool as this thornback ray hiding in their depths.

We're back in the greater Clyde area for another @baskingsharkscotland shark research expedition. This area was the last place in Scotland where the basking shark was hunted, the last ones being harpooned in 1994!

We've had a great first few days on our shark research trip with 11 new individual basking sharks catalogued. While conducting photo ID on our second shark of the day today this curious common seal (harbour seal if you're from the US) popped it's wee head up to say hi.

To swim with giant sharks with this incredible ridge line looming over me was pretty special. Arran's spectacular coastal scenery in its autumnal colours!

Basking shark season is over! We had a great summer season and a productive research trip but, apart from a few 'tail-enders' the sharks have started their migration. This image is one from our main season, you may have seen it circulating in the mainstream media.

Another year done on our big blue planet. As usual my yearly plan is an uncertain one, but I'm looking forwards to continuing life's great adventure.

Another great day training at the blue hole today with @freedivedahab . Focusing on deep equalisation and relaxation. Nice to step out of the water to a strong turkish coffee once we've finished diving too!
